As the demand for stainless steel surged, nickel consumption rose steadily, driving up prices sharply. During World War II, nickel was classified as a strategic material and strictly controlled by relevant nations, leading to severe supply shortages. Consequently, countries such as the United States and Germany began researching stainless steels that utilized manganese as a substitute for nickel. Through extensive research, the United States standardized manganese-nitrogen-substituted nickel steel and developed the high-manganese austenitic stainless steel series-known as the 200 series. However, as the nickel supply situation in the U.S. gradually improved and stainless steel production was no longer constrained by raw material shortages, the 200 series did not see further significant development there. Meanwhile, several Indian researchers who had participated in the development of the 200 series returned to India; adapting to their country's specific conditions-characterized by abundant manganese but scarce nickel-they introduced the U.S.-developed 200 series grades for further research and application, achieving great success. Nevertheless, the deliberate addition of manganese resulted in characteristics such as resistance to deformation and poor workability, as well as high strength but insufficient ductility. This necessitated adjustments to metallurgical processes and chemical composition to optimize mechanical properties and achieve the best balance between strength and ductility.
